Testimonials
"I had no idea that the lady across the table from me - we'll call her Joyce from Baypath Caregiver Training - was about to send me on a journey that was to be a life-changing event.
We had met over desserts and coffee to discuss my problems and anxieties arising from my wife's illness, a dementia type disease, suffered today by over five million persons in the USA with large increases expected in the foreseeable future. Joyce provided excellent caregiver training. And together, we worked out an integrated caregiver program for me to implement.
Joyce said she was referring me to Elder Community Care and was arranging for me to see one of their therapists. Joyce said that ECC was well equipped to assuage my anxieties, fears, and frustrations arising from the awful dementia problems my wife was experiencing.
My ECC therapist, Susan, has brought me from the brink of despair to a condition of coping I didn't think was possible.
First, Susan made it possible for me to understand the disease by recommending a book entitled The 36-Hour Day. It answered questions about the disease that were troubling me terribly. I call it "the Golden Book" because every page enabled me to understand the problems my wife was facing. Understanding was key to my coping. I can open the book randomly at any page, and there it is, the "what, why, where, when, and how" of her specific problem - and how one should handle it. I bought a copy for me and another for our children to share.
Second, Susan helped me work out techniques and approaches to handling many problems my wife and I were facing. One example, but just one of many: my wife's current deep anxiety of any doctor's appointments. Susan's advice worked beautifully to get my wife to her appointments without my getting angry and having a stroke!
Third, Susan is helping me to anticipate the future. As the disease progresses I will face many new challenges; as the primary caregiver it is helpful to work out beforehand the programs and coping techniques that I can use.
Last but not least, Susan recognized that both my wife and I needed to see a doctor who specialized in helping the elderly to live as best they can. A miracle happened! After only two office visits and one medication, my wife stated - and I know it to be true - she feels better overall - more confident, more like her old self - and both she and I notice that her cognitive abilities have improved significantly. If it weren't for my Elder Community Care therapist Susan and the ECC program, we would never have met with this doctor.
In the words of that great theatrical superstar of older times, George M. Cohan, "My wife thanks you, my daughter thanks you, my sons thank you, and I thank you," Elder Community Care and all your dedicated personnel."
